Steam to officially end support for Windows 7 and 8 in 2024

Steam has revealed that it will stop supporting Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 OS starting January 1, 2024. This decision can be seen on its support page.

Following the given date, users of these old operating systems will no longer be able to access the Steam client and all its games and features.

To continue playing games or using applications through Steam, you must upgrade to a newer version of Windows, such as Windows 10 or Windows 11.

According to Steam, the reason why they're ending support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 OS is because of Google Chrome.

Steam will end support for Windows 7 and 8 in 2024

On the Steam support page, Valve explained that the core features of the gaming platform "rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome [web browser], which no longer functions on older versions of Windows."

The game company also added that "future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above."

Steam's hardware and software survey for February 2023 revealed that a minimal proportion of players are actually using older OS versions. Based on the report, the sum of the percentages for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 indicates only 1.86 percent.

Many gamers were not surprised by Steam's decision to officially end support for older operating systems, given that Microsoft no longer releases software updates and bug fixes for Windows 7 and 8.
